Winter Wonderland: Exploring Texas in Your RV
Winter is the perfect time to pack up the RV and explore the diverse and beautiful landscapes of Texas. From the quirky art scene in Marfa to the rugged terrain of Big Bend National Park, Texas Hill Country’s rolling vineyards, and the vibrant culture of Austin and San Antonio, there’s something for every traveler. Here’s a guide to four unique locations that will make your winter trip to Texas unforgettable.
Marfa was on my bucket list for a long time before we actually went. One trip, we are in love and counting down the days until we go back. |
1. Marfa and Far West Texas
Why Visit? Marfa is a quirky, artsy town in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, known for its unique blend of modern art and desert mystique. It’s a haven for creatives and those seeking an offbeat travel experience. We loved our time in Marfa so much that we are planning a trip back later this year!
The Prada Marfa Art Installation is beautiful drive out from Marfa. I was amazed at how many people drive to this spot for photos! |
Must-See Attractions:
- Marfa Lights: These mysterious, glowing orbs have been baffling visitors for years. Head to the Marfa Lights Viewing Area for a chance to see this unexplained phenomenon.
- Chinati Foundation: An art museum founded by artist Donald Judd, showcasing large-scale installations and contemporary art.
- Prada Marfa: An art installation resembling a high-fashion boutique, located just outside the town.
RV Traveler Tips:
- Camping: Tumble In RV Park offers full hookups and a great location close to town. The Big Bend Ranch State Park is also nearby, offering more rugged, natural settings for those looking to get off the beaten path.
- Activities: Hiking, stargazing, and exploring the town’s eclectic shops and galleries make for a perfect winter itinerary.
Big Bend is vast and has breathtaking scenic drives and hiking trails throughout. Give yourself plenty of time to explore this national treasure. |
2. Big Bend National Park
Why Visit? Big Bend is a paradise for nature lovers, with its vast desert landscapes, towering mountains, and the winding Rio Grande. Winter is ideal for visiting, as the cooler temperatures make hiking and outdoor activities more enjoyable. Allow for plenty of time in Big Bend. It is a vast park, and a redo is on our horizon.
Must-See Attractions:
- Santa Elena Canyon: A breathtaking canyon carved by the Rio Grande, perfect for kayaking or a scenic hike.
- Chisos Basin: A mountainous area within the park offering incredible vistas, diverse wildlife, and numerous hiking trails.
- Hot Springs: Soak in natural hot springs along the Rio Grande for a relaxing experience after a day of exploring.
RV Traveler Tips:
- Camping: The park has several campgrounds suitable for RVs, including the Rio Grande Village RV Campground, which offers full hookups. We stayed at BJ's RV Park in Terlingua. It is a private campground just outside of the park. With full hookups and laundry, it was just what we needed!
- Activities: Hiking, bird watching, and scenic drives are top activities. Don’t miss the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive for stunning views.
We hiked up Enchanted Rock on New Years Day 2024. It was a great way to start the new year. |
3. Texas Hill Country and Austin
Why Visit? Texas Hill Country is known for its rolling hills, wineries, and charming small towns. Pair this with a visit to Austin, the state capital, famous for its live music scene and vibrant culture.
Fredericksburg has wonderful wineries. Go once and you will want to go back over and over. We have loved our time in this hill country town. |
Must-See Attractions:
- Fredericksburg: This German-influenced town is famous for its wineries and historic sites like the National Museum of the Pacific War.
- Enchanted Rock: A massive pink granite dome offering hiking, rock climbing, and panoramic views.
- Austin: Don’t miss the live music on 6th Street, Barton Springs Pool, and the vibrant food scene.
The sunsets in Texas are so beautiful. Take time to kick back and enjoy the sunsets and sunrises while you are there. |
RV Traveler Tips:
- Camping: Fredericksburg RV Park is centrally located, making it easy to explore the Hill Country. Austin Lone Star RV Resort offers a convenient base for exploring the city. We have stayed at the Fredericksburg RV Park twice and love it. The facilities are clean and well laid out. The staff is friendly and helpful. I would recommend for anyone to stay here! In Austin we stayed at the Pecan RV Park in Austin. Look them up online and give them a call for a reservation. They are old school and don't do online reservations. It is a perfect spot to stay right in the heart of Barton Springs!
- Activities: Wine tasting, hiking, and enjoying local cuisine in the Hill Country, combined with music venues, food trucks, and urban exploration in Austin.
We did a lot of biking in San Antonio. The trails are well laid out and easy to travel on. |
4. San Antonio and Waco
Why Visit? San Antonio and Waco offer a mix of historic sites, cultural attractions, and unique experiences, making them perfect for a winter getaway.
The Magnolia Market in Waco was a fun little New Year's Eve. activity |
Must-See Attractions:

- The Alamo: A historic site and symbol of Texas independence.
- Waco: Visit the Magnolia Market at the Silos, made famous by Chip and Joanna Gaines from the TV show “Fixer Upper,” and the Dr. Pepper Museum.
The mission churches along the mission trail in San Antonio was a wonderful way to spend the day. |

The Barton Springs Area of Austin was a fun little detour on our trip to Texas. We enjoyed biking and exploring along the way. |
