Maximize Your Grand Design RV: Tips for Making the Most of Your Space

We use hooks everywhere to keep things organized and out of the way!

There is a lot to be said for a smaller RV.  In most cases, a smaller RV is easier on the wallet with the overall cost.  This includes the sticker price of the RV and your tow vehicle plus the cost of fuel for all of your travel.  A smaller RV also opens the doors to more camping experiences.  Some big rigs can't make it into tight spaces or are over the size requirements in state or national parks.  Our 2019 Grand Design 19BWE checked all of the boxes when we bought it 5 years ago.  It still does today.  How can you make the most of a small RV?  Keep reading!

Maximize Your Grand Design RV: Tips for Making the Most of Your Space

When it comes to RV living, especially in a small space, every square inch counts. Our Grand Design RV has been our home away from home, and over time, we've discovered some fantastic ways to make the most out of every nook and cranny. Whether you're a seasoned RV owner or just starting your journey, here are some of our favorite tips for maximizing your RV's potential.

We love our murphy bed.  It is a regular queen size and works well for my husband and I.

1. The Magic of the Murphy Bed

One of the standout features in our Grand Design RV is the Murphy bed. This space-saving wonder is a game-changer. During the day, it folds up neatly, creating a spacious living area. At night, it easily folds down into a comfortable bed. This dual-purpose piece of furniture is perfect for small RVs, allowing you to maximize your living space without sacrificing comfort.

Tip: Use the space behind the Murphy bed when it’s folded up for extra storage. Hooks or slim organizers can keep items like blankets, books, or remote controls handy yet out of sight.

Our pantry is organized with Tupperware Modular Mates and other containers to keep things in one place and easy to reach!
Baskets are also used to organize napkins, snacks and other items to keep them in one spot!  These easily transport to our table outside.

We have hanging closet storage where we place our packing cubes with clothes to stay organized.

2. Smart Storage Solutions

Storage is key in any RV, and the Grand Design RV comes equipped with some clever options. Under-bunk storage is a lifesaver, giving you a place to stash larger items like camping chairs, outdoor gear, or even extra bedding. The storage compartments in the shower are another hidden gem, perfect for keeping toiletries, towels, or cleaning supplies organized.

Tip: Use collapsible gear wherever possible. Items like foldable bowls, nesting pots, and collapsible laundry baskets save space when not in use, making them perfect for RV life.

We have added hooks all over our RV to hang towels and other items.

Key hooks by the door keep us organized.

3. Hooks Everywhere!

Hooks are a small but mighty addition to your RV. We’ve added hooks throughout our Grand Design RV to hang everything from coats and hats to keys and dog leashes. They’re especially handy by the door, in the bathroom, and near the kitchen for easy access to frequently used items.

Tip: Magnetic hooks are a great option if you don't want to drill holes. They can be easily moved around as needed and are strong enough to hold heavier items.

These phone holders hang next to the bed and allow us to connect a charger cable.

4. Convenient Phone Holders

In a small space, it’s easy for things to get lost. We’ve added phone holders near the bed and living area to keep our devices within reach and off the counters. These holders also double as charging stations, keeping cords organized and out of the way.

Tip: Consider using a wall-mounted organizer that can hold multiple devices, keeping everything in one tidy spot.

We don't have a dinette so we use tv trays to eat indoors.  These are stored under our bunks.

Since there are three of us, I use this folding chair as another place to sit and eat indoors if we need to.

5. TV Trays for Dining and More

TV trays are another versatile addition to our RV. They’re great for meals, especially when you want to eat while watching your favorite show. When not in use, they fold up and can be stored out of sight, taking up minimal space.

Tip: Look for TV trays with storage options underneath, perfect for keeping remotes, coasters, or magazines handy.

This Duraflame Cube heater has been my ride or die since our popup camper days.  It still works great.  I would recommend this to anyone!

6. Keep Cozy with a Small Space Heater

Even in warmer months, the nights can get chilly. We keep a small space heater in our RV for those cool evenings. It doesn’t take up much room, but it makes a big difference in comfort. Plus, it’s much more energy-efficient than heating the entire RV.

Tip: Look for a space heater with a built-in thermostat and safety features like automatic shutoff in case it tips over.

Little items like pet bedding, our toiletry caddy, hampers and bath mat travel in our shower floor.  This is also where we stack tubs of toys and other items on a tow day!

7. Make the Most of Your Shower Storage

The shower isn’t just for getting clean—it’s also a great spot for extra storage. We’ve added a few suction-cup shelves and a shower caddy to hold shampoo, soap, and other essentials. This frees up cabinet space and keeps everything within easy reach.

Tip: Use waterproof containers or bags to store items in the shower that might be prone to getting wet. It keeps them safe and makes cleaning up easier.

We use our under bunk area to store our pickle ball set, tv trays, a folding chair and life jacket.  I also put winter shoes here during the cooler months because they are bulky.

8. Under-Bunk Storage: A Hidden Treasure

The under-bunk storage area in our RV has been a game-changer for keeping things organized. This space is perfect for stowing larger, bulkier items that don’t need to be accessed every day. Think seasonal gear, extra bedding, or even a small toolbox.

Tip: Use clear storage bins so you can easily see what’s inside without having to dig through everything. Labeling each bin can also save time when you're looking for something specific.
