We got an early start to make the most of our day. The quiet morning roads and rising sun made for a serene drive. Arriving early at Carlsbad Caverns allowed us to beat the crowds and enjoy the full experience at a relaxed pace.

The kennels were easy to use and well maintained!

Pet Boarding Options

Visitor Center Highlights

Once we arrived, we headed to the visitor center to check out the exhibits and catch the educational movie in the theater. This short film is a must-see, offering a glimpse into the history and natural wonders of the caverns. It’s the perfect way to prepare for the adventure below.

The Natural Entry is the way to go if you are able.
Be prepared for lots of walking, but it was such an adventure!

Planning Ahead

Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance. Tickets for cave entry can be reserved up to 30 days ahead. General admission into the cave is just $1 after paying the park’s entry fee. Seniors, take note: if you have a senior pass, you can save significantly on park entry and enjoy benefits at other National Parks and government sites. It’s a worthwhile investment for frequent travelers.

The farther we went down the less natural light we could see.  The natural entrance allowed us to have the full cavern experience!

The Natural Entrance Experience

For the full Carlsbad Caverns experience, take the natural entrance into the cave. This 1.2-mile walk descends steeply and provides a dramatic introduction to the caverns. Inside, you’ll walk another mile to explore the Great Room, a massive and awe-inspiring chamber. The pathways are well-lit and easy to follow, but good walking shoes and socks are essential.

Though the temperature inside the cave is cool, you’ll warm up from the walking. Jackets aren’t necessary unless you tend to get cold easily.

The views became more spectacular the farther we traveled down!

Picnic Lunch and Final Thoughts

After our exploration, we enjoyed a picnic lunch at the park. The outdoor picnic areas are a great spot to relax and reflect on the incredible sights you’ve just experienced. Packing your own lunch not only saves time but also allows you to soak in the beauty of the surrounding desert.

All of the forms and features were amazing!
Everywhere you looked there were stunning views.

Why It’s Worth It

Carlsbad Caverns is a spectacular destination that lives up to the hype. From the dramatic natural entrance to the stunning formations inside the Great Room, every step and mile of the journey is unforgettable. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, this trip is sure to leave a lasting impression.

It was a long walk down but worth every step!
I could not get over the views the farther we walked down.
Even though I had visited this National Park once before, it was like a brand new experience all over again!

Plan ahead, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget your sense of adventure. This is one day trip you’ll be talking about for years to come!

I kept thinking about what it must have been like for the first explorers to witness these views for the very first time!
